Not a great picture, but trying to show the "interesting" uniforms the boys at the school had to wear. The crosswalks are marked with the black and white pole, with orange circle at top, to be clear that this is a crosswalk where pedestrians have right of way. Back in the botanical gardens, everything is open this morning. Fun curly thingie coming out of the flower. More curly ones with funner colors (did that push the button?) sign says it's a "Anthurium andraeanum hybrid". We just think it's weird.

Interesting fountain in the park. One word descriptions from each of us: garish, gaudy, ostentatious, wow. The monkey puzzle tree again - notice the interesting bark. Beautiful flower beds everywhere. Across the street. This used to be a large school and had been converted into shops and galleries.

We'd seen this one before, going down the road. Sculpture in the middle of the square, next to the cathredral. Welcome to the cathedral. Inside the church, beautiful stained glass. But there was a service going on, so we went on to the tower first.

You can climb to the top of the tower for a $4 donation... so we did! Looking down the steps - a very close, winding stair for much of the climb. The room with the bell-ringing ropes Partway up, looking down on the bells - they hang upside down

The last about third was ladders. From the bottom of the final ladder, looking straight up. Pretty steep pitch! Woo-hoo we made it to the top! From the top of the cathedral, looking down at the sculpture in the square.

Heading back down Going up and down, they recommend facing in. Back down, in the church, service is over so we can wander to take pictures of the stained glass windows. The pulpit. Tomb of a bishop.

Beautiful sculpture. Local bagpipe player, with his hat out for donations. "Animates" - great name for a pet store!

  IM004060 IM004058 IM004059

We stopped for lunch here. Had our first fish & chips for lunch - pretty good! Fun sign inside The south island. Look closely at the top right shoreline, where the dark blue water comes so incredibly close in to shore. That is Kaikoura, with the close in deep water for whale-watching.
